Ok accidently backspaced and lost my post during preview, yay I love starting over....
I only found one other post dealing with this error and the moderator says the problem is unmatching Joomlastats and Activation mod. I made sure my versions matched, and they do, so not sure what else it might be.
My joomla site is running fine but I am trying to get a stats mod to work. I tried J4age but couldn't get it to collect stats for more than one day after activation. So after reading that j4age is based on this one I thought I'd give the tried and true original a go.
I am using Joomla 1.5.17 and can't use the Joomlastats 2.x unless I turn on the legacy mod setting which I haven't tried and prefer not too in case it adversely effects other mods. Maybe this won't happen I'm not a Joomla expert I'm intermediate at best right now.
So I got the latest 3.x versions of Joomlastats and the Activation mod from your site and followed the install steps without a hitch. No errors ect. Activasion mod is published and so on. But when I click on Joomlastats in Components I get the above mentioned error everytime.
Now before posting I read the moderator post about if you're using version 3x make sure you get the newest version from the ftp and try that first. So I connected to the ftp and sure enough the version is slightly newer than the one I got off the main download page so I got the most updated Joomlastats and Activation mods off the ftp. Uninstalled the last versions and repeated the process.
Got through the install once again without any errors but still when I click on the Joomlastats drop down menu in Components I still get the same error mentioned above.
Probably a simple fix but I don't know it.
Thanks in advance for your time and response.

I had EXACTLY the same thing happen. I had installed j4age just fine, but wanted some of the front end extensions that JoomlaStats had. Figured I knew how to do the installation process, since it's exactly the same. Everything loaded fine, clicked on the component, and got the same message. Bummer. Hope someone can figure this out. If I find a solution, I will let you know!

Thought I had it figured out. Realized I hadn't uninstalled the j4age activation module. Did that, uninstalled, and re-installed jstats, same thing. Went into ftp to make sure nothing was in there, anywhere, from the j4age install, nothing. Tried putting the activation code into the template, same error. Just can't get to the component. j4age went so smooth on install. Just can't figure this out.

Try:
remove tables in MySql database
- all tables like jos_jstats_*
Worked for me.

Ya I'm novice with MySql. I setup WAMP no problem though.
I guess I'll just have to keep trying different combos of the activation and stats plugin since not much response to this.
Thanks for the input though all.

Hello,
j4age is like Version 4 of JoomlaStats, so you basically upgrade to the newer version. This is going to adjust also your Database. The problem you have is, that you try an downgrade from j4age to JoomlaStats, which is not supported. If you like to get it reinstalled, you have to use the "uninstall" button within j4age, which is going to drop all JS/j4age DB tables (& statistics). You can also drop manually all j4age tables to reinstall joomlastats.
Cheers
